No doubt you have noticed I have not been including much information here recently. I am STILL a huge fan of San Diego but with my business and keeping up my other blogs it has gotten to be too difficult to continue to post here regularly, and I have been trying to consolidate some on-line activity.

I have been writing a lot on my ActiveRain blog and include lots of information there about Carlsbad and San Diego in general. So going forward I will be posting my Fans of Coastal San Diego stuff there. Please feel free to stop by and visit Carlsbad Homes And Real Estate Tidbits.

Visit Auggie's House of Crab in Leucadia (Encinitas)

Discovering new restaurants in my area is always fun, even if the place is not actually new.

In this case I just tried out a place that has only been open for a few months in Leucadia, the funky community in north Encinitas along the coast.

Auggie's House of Crab opened a number of months ago and is well wroth the visit. I stopped in for the lunch special the other day and will definitely go back. If you like good fresh seafood in a no frills kind of place, Auggie's is worth the trip.

New Cell Phone Law Begins July 1, 2008

Surfing and the Environment

There is a new ecologically-minded surfing school in Encinitas.

The founder not only teaches folks about surfing, but also about the environment, in particular the plight of the rain forests in Costa Rica and the negative impact of deforestation. And funds from the school go directly toward the purchase of rain forest acreage for preservation.

A Trip Along Route 101 in Carlsbad

Route 101 is a historic road here in the San Diego area, perhaps more so in North County.

A trip along this coastal roadway leads past beautiful beaches, dozens of eateries, loads of shopping and so much more. Route 101 is NOT just a way to get from point A to point B (and avoid the freeway) but is really a visual experience.

Most people associate this time of year with cleaning, organizing/uncluttering and updating. In the spirit of the season, here are a few ideas to assist you with your Spring spruce up . . .

It's really not surprising that a living space that is crowded, cramped or cluttered will stifle your creativity and ideas, as well as your productivity. Clutter is also not good for your ongoing health and vitality. In fact, physical clutter can cause you to feel depressed, unmotivated and stuck in life because it attracts low-level (stagnant) energy.

Interestingly, research studies show that people who "hoard" items can have an especially difficult time advancing forward in life and releasing the past. There are two common types of hoarding: emotional hoarding and intellectual hoarding. Emotional hoarders hold on to items because they fear they will lose the memories associated with a person or event. Intellectual hoarders hold on to items and, in particular, information, because they fear they might need that information one day. While hoarders make up a relatively small percentage of the general public, on average most of us hold on to far more "stuff" than we need to . . . Creating a healthy home is about living more simplistically and surrounding you and your family with only those belongings that bring you joy and/or provide a useful purpose in your life.

HERE ARE SOME COMMON MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN SETTING UP THEIR SURROUNDINGS (by the way you may want to check out the series I hosted with guest Blogger Kathi Burns on Getting Organized to Move...even if you are not moving)

The failure to pare-down as you progress forward: Most people only wear 20-percent of the clothing that hangs in their closet. If you haven't worn (or used) something in the past year-chances are you never will, so it's safe to let it go.

Accessibility: Available space (in file cabinets, drawers, shelves, and cabinets) is a lot like real estate . . . it's all about location. The items that you use most often need to be placed in the most convenient locations. Store "like" items together.

Wasted Space: Invest in a closet or garage storage unit to take advantage of every inch of space available to you.

Repeat Performance: This usually occurs when there isn't an inventory system in place within a household so you continue to purchase duplicate supplies, or you continue to run out of items. Keep a master list, and stick to it, this will also help you to avoid impulse buying.

Home Base: Have designated areas for incoming/outgoing mail, keys, and other personal items you need quick and easy access to. Open your mail every day, and do not let it accumulate. Also, rethink your magazine and newspaper subscriptions, particularly if periodicals are going unread. Request to be taken off the junk mail and catalog distribution lists. 13th Annual ShamROCK 2008

New Postal Rates Effective MAY 12, 2008

The United States Postal Services has announced another increase in postal rates, effective May 12, 2008.

The price of a first class stamp will rise to 42 cents (from 41 cents); more Forever stamps will be made available at the 41 cent rate - buy them now and they will still get your mail delivered once the rates increase.

The cost of sending a post card will rise to 27 cents. Other rates will change as well.

Visit the Balboa Theatre in San Diego

San Diego has a number of venues for theatrical entertainment - The Balboa Theatre, at 868 Fourth Street in the Gaslamp District, is well worth a visit.

I attended the Brazilian Guitar Festival last night at the Balboa, my first visit. The theatre has a historic background, and an interesting interior (the huge wall fountains in lit alcoves are a curious feature which, while intriguing, don't do much to add to the acoustics IMO). The theatre has just been restored to its former glory and certainly has some character.

But the real enjoyment was the guitar festival, which was extraordinary. The Assad Brothers, Sergio and Odair, have an international reputation in the music world, and seeing them perform in person was remarkable. Their equally talented sister, Badi Assad (herself an inventive, talented guitarist with an incredible voice and a penchant for incorporating intriguing sounds in her music - see a video below) was also featured, as were two other accomplished guitarists, Celso Machado and Romero Lubambo.

The music, almost half of which was original compositions, was wonderful, showcasing each performer's particular talents, artistry, and interests. While I would have preferred a more intimate venue for this sort of performance, it was a most enjoyable performance

Plan an evening at the theatre, and enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants within a few minutes walk. Park at the Horton Plaza Garage adjacent to the theatre - you may want to make a purchase at the Plaza to get your parking ticket validated. The Balboa does not validate but they will provide a coupon for a reduction in the parking after 3 hours.

My Visit to Hawaii - Trek up Diamond Head

I just returned from a quick trip to Honolulu - my first. I had a 2 day real estate convention there (which was terrific - lots of great learning on how to better help buyers and sellers in this market) but with 3 days to be a tourist.

The weather was warm but we had a fair amount of rain. Sunday was the best and we took a hike up Diamond Head. Great fun and not too difficult (I went up in my reef sandals!!).

Here are some pics of the journey. If you have been you know it is a good time. But if you have not done it, I highly recommend doing so. Enjoy!!

BTW we had dinner at Keo's, twice. Terrific Thai restaurant with great food. Worth a visit if you are in Honolulu. Next time we hope to go to Kauai or Maui. Any thoughts on that?

A Pictorial Visit to Torrey Pines State Reserve

I visited Torrey Pines State Reserve this past Sunday for the first time. Hard to believe, I suppose, for folks who have lived here for a while. I have passed it numerous times and kept promising I would stop by and spend some time exploring. I had to go to Pacific Beach to lookat some property for a client so it was a perfect opportunity.

If you have never been GO. If you have been well, you know what I mean.

This park is extraordinary, and an amazing piece of Southern California coastline. It's quite different from scenes back east, but it did remind me of the Cape Cod National Seashore on Cape Cod about 2 hours from Boston. Preserving coastlines such as this is so important, especially when ones sees the ravages of urban sprawl and the destruction of portions of the ocast that can never be replaced.

Art Lovers - New Exhibit at Cannon Art Gallery

For San Diego art lovers, the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad is hosting its first exhibit of the 2008 at the gallery, opening this Sunday January 20 with a reception.

Read about the Cannon Art Gallery November December 2007 Show.

The exhibit, "UNIVERSAL APPEAL - Memorable Portraits from National Geographic" should be a stunning show, with some very recognizable photographs (one, in particular, is a photo that is known to millions of people around the world).

I'll post an article with photos of this exhibit either Sunday or Monday. Stay tuned.

If you'd like to attend, the Cannon Art Gallery is located adjacent to the Carlsbad Library in South Carlsbad at 1775 Dove Lane, just a short distance north of the Alga Road/El Camino Real intersection near the La Costa Resort and Spa.

Our Marine Layer

Visit the San Dieguito Heritage Museum in Encinitas

If you have an interest in history, especially if you live in North County San Diego, why not visit the San Dieguito Heritage Museum in Encinitas (you can read more here)?

The San Dieguito Heritage Museum has new digs, located near Encinitas Boulevard on Quail Gardens Road and has a fascinating display of artifacts, photos and information about the area (San Dieguito encompasses Encinitas (Leucadia), Solana Beach, Del Mar, Cardiff and Rancho Santa Fe). There are also several historic buildings on site, an old fire engine, and early 1900s far equipment.

The LUX Art Institute in Encinitas

I'm a big fan of art, and an art collector (not high end, mind you) and my wife and I used to own an art gallery when we lived in Cambridge, MA. So I am always on the look-out for new galleries and museums, and enjoy visiting when I have the time.

The LUX Art Institute was founded in 1998 in Encinitas, but they recently opened their new facility there, which is a work of art itself. The concept is unique, too - the artist in residence - where viewers can not only enjoy the works of art that are displayed but also watch and interact with the artist at work. Artists, one at a time, live in an apartment at the institute for several weeks.

The ABCs of Eating in San Diego

I am a confessed foodie - eating out is a favorite activity of mine, whether it be lunch, dinner or brunch. Dinner on Friday night is a nice way to start the weekend, although Sunday brunch always seems sort of decadent.

I remember being intrigued when I first starting visiting California and noticed the Health Department postings in the windows denoting whether the eatery was an A, B or C. I had no clue what that meant, but like most folks here now know that the ABCs of eating in San Diego are determined by the state Department of Environmental Health, based on inspections.

So, it's not at all like a Zagat rating. But it's an important rating scale nonetheless.

The A (90 - 100 points, substantial compliance with the law), B (80 - 89, needs improvements in structure and/or operations) and C (79 or below, which is failure - WOW, I remember in school C was average!!) signs denote the sanitation and food safety levels as determined by the most recent inspection. There are major violations, minor violations and good retail practices and these are indicated in the inspectional reports. And eateries can be closed when health hazards exist and cannot reopen until corrections are made and written permission is obtained from the department.

Guess I wouldn't want to eat sushi from a B, and certainly not a C. :)

Come to think of it, I have never been to even a B.

Happy New Year 2008 - Feng Shui Updates: A Great Year Ahead

Here's a Feng Shui Resource update from Kathryn Holt on 2008. Sounds like a great year ahead, especially for the home.

I hope that you and your family had a joyous holiday season. Many people I've spoken with have been anxiously awaiting the new year, and with good reason . . . 2008 promises to be an especially auspicious (favorable) time for new beginnings and fresh starts.

For starters, this is the Year of the Rat. The Rat represents the first in the long line of zodiac animals (see side bar). So as the Boar was wrapping up the previous 12-year cycle in 2007, the Rat will be ushering in a brand-new 12-year cycle. But that's not all . . . The Earth Rat has special significance because it also represents the onset of a new 60-year cycle (12 animal signs x 5 elements = 60 years).

The Bottom line: 2008 will be one of the best years there is to commence new projects and endeavors, such as: buying a house, starting up a new business, getting married (or entering into a new relationship), having a baby, or whatever hopes and ambitions you may have been pondering. The trick is, do your homework. That is, be sure to take the time to plan and prepare rather than blindly rushing in. This is a year that is strongly symbolic of change. Change/transition can be seen as a challenge or an opportunity, so do your best to embrace a positive outlook wherever your path leads you . . .

Winter is the season of renewal and re-emergence, so it can be a good time to reinvent some aspect of your home or lifestyle (which also ties in with the upcoming Rat year).

The start of a new year is a great time to make updates to your home, such as:

Rearranging your bed/desk/furniture to accommodate the two unfavorable stars (see side bar)
Space Clear and unclutter your living and working spaces so you kick off 2008 with a "clean slate"
Turn up the color: The addition of color can instantly shift the mood of an environment and how you perceive and interact with that environment, by softening what is too harsh, cooling down what is too hot, or warming up what is too cold and lifeless. Even splashes of color can be effective, such as painting your ceiling a color and leaving the surrounding walls white, or painting the trim around door and window frames to accentuate views and create flow between rooms, or paint an accent wall for a little extra pizzazz.

Upcoming Classes: Next Class---Tuesday, January 8th (6:00 - 9:00 p.m.). "Celebrate the New Year." This class offers tips for setting up your home for 2008 and offers you a sneak preview of your personal forecast for the year. This class is only offered twice a year. . . Once in North County through San Dieguito Adult School and again in Coronado on Monday, February 25th.

Lost in the Horton Plaza Garage

Have you ever been lost in the Horton Plaza Garage? I have.

Well, not really lost, but I couldn't find the way back to my car after attending the San Diego Rep Theater.

We've been to the theater about 15 times now, so I have finally figured it all out. But it sure took a while, and I still have to pay close attention so I know where I entered the mall (say, Lady Footlocker, and can find my way BACK to the same doorway). I think it is one of the most confusing complexes I have been in (and coming from Boston, which is famous for parking garages, that is quite a feat).

I need a handheld GPS just for getting to and from my car. And for finding the right car exit so I am heading in the right direction to leave town.

When I saw there were FRUITS or VEGETABLES, I figured it would be easy. HAH! And actually it is not the garage itself but getting TO and FROM Horton Plaza that makes no sense. I suppose when it was built it was quite the thing. But their signage is terrible, and all the nooks and crannies, small stairwells, slow elevators, multiple floors, and twists and turns in the mall itself drive me nuts. I'm not a big shopper so I don't pay much attention to the stores - perhaps that's my problem.

In any case, if you have not been there...beware. And if you have, I suspect some of you know exactly what I mean.

The Meditation Gardens at the Encinitas Self-Realization Fellowship Retreat

Surf's Up in San Diego

The surf was up, today, way up.

There were surf advisories last night and today the beaches were crowded with surfers and lots of folks taking in the views of the bigger than normal waves.

I stopped by Cardiff and then Swami's beach in Encinitas to check out the scene.

Time to Cut Your Christmas Tree

Our annual holiday tradition includes heading out to a local tree farm and cutting down our tree. We've done this for years, in all kinds of weather, and living in New England for so many years (and for 2 years in Minnesota) this usually meant cold, snowy weather - MINUS 25 in Minnesota one winter! And lots of tree farms.

We were so pleased to find that we could do the same here in Southern California, although the trees are different (Monterey Pine and Noble Fir are popular and grow well in this climate), and fewer folks seem to go for cutting down trees as opposed to the ones on the lots.

We have now gone to Mission Pine Tree Farm in Fallbrook for 3 years in a row, so it has become our new California tradition in our Carlsbad home. They are located at 4062 South Mission north of the 76 (Mission). Phone them at (760) 728-5262.

One again the holiday season is upon us, and as in the past, I am amazed at how much there is to do.

Seems like every town has a tree lighting ceremony, a parade and other events for the residents and visitors, and you can’t possibly do all this stuff, plus get your shopping done.

Feng Shui Fall Update: Autumn The Season of Decline

Greetings!

I have received numerous calls and emails from clients and real estate agents regarding the recent San Diego fires. I wanted to devote this Update to providing you with some insight on the symbolism and significance of Fire as seen from the perspective of Feng Shui.

Most people associate the element of Fire with destruction. However, Fire actually pertains to purification, which is why it is frequently used in blessing ceremonies and consecrations. There is a widely held belief that when Mother Nature becomes sick or out-of-balance (due to either natural or man-made conditions), she will find a way to heal herself---in this case, purifying the Earth through Fire, with the assistance of Wood. Sadly, it is an unfortunate and, often, unavoidable consequence that humans have become a part of the equation as we have encroached upon nature through development.
As some of you may know, I live in the Del Dios area of Rancho Santa Fe, so we were in the direct path of the Fire. Like many residents, we were evacuated for the week, waiting to hear if our house would still be standing upon our return. One question in particular kept entering my mind during that time period, "Does creating and maintaining a healthy (high vibration) energy environment within your home/land, assist in preventing Mother Nature's purification process?"

For years I have been conducting environmental clearings on my home and land, you might recognize these techniques as "Space Clearings" and "Geopathic Stress detection." I have cleared several lines of GS from my home . . . The lines were running Northwest to Southeast (or, from one side of the house to the other), rather than from the front of the house to the back, or the back of the house to the front. Upon returning home, we noticed that our house, and the houses to both sides of us, had all survived the fire, several houses/structures in front of us and behind us had not been so lucky. Is this coincidence? Are fires really that random, or is there more to energy clearings/environmental healings than meets the eye?

Following the Cedar Fires in 2003 I contacted several of my clients who live in the Scripps Ranch area. A recurring pattern I noticed while working in that area of San Diego was the presence of multiple lines of Geopathic Stress in many of the homes . . . Not one or two lines, but upwards to six or eight lines per household. I'm happy to report that my clients/students (who had done the energy work themselves or who hired me to do it for them), also had homes that survived the fires. While I realize that this is limited in terms of field research, I continue to be intrigued, and I would be interested to know your related experiences, if any.

Most of the Feng Shui Masters I know would say, "There are no coincidences . . ." but I'll leave that up to you. During the week that followed the fires, firefighters continued to patrol our neighborhood. I had the opportunity to speak to several of them regarding the events that had taken place. The response I received was simple, "We were due." Like the ancient Shamans, Geomancers and FS Masters from thousands of years ago who studied nature and the patterns of the Universe, I was informed that fires are also cyclical . . . Depending upon the region, climate and terrain, it is predicted that most areas will encounter a fire every twenty to fifty years. These fires are seen as nature's way of "clearing out" areas, and this decline makes the needed renewal and rebirth possible. I wasn't surprised that this theory echos the larger Universal cycle of energy: Winter = renewal, Spring = rebirth/growth, Summer = peak, early Autumn = fluctuation, late Fall = decline, back to renewal. Understanding this pattern (even if it's in a non-Feng Shui manner) is what enables safety officials to monitor which areas are most vulnerable in the unforeseen future (or, "who's due"). Unfortunately, Santa Ana winds can be less predictable.

Here are some things you can do to honor your home, property and listings:

1. Look for symptoms of Geopathic Stress. (I can send you an article if you're unfamiliar with GS.)

2. Eliminate clutter and debris inside and outside of your home. (Just because you can't see stagnant energy doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Stagnant energy suffocates health, flowing Ch'i and ripples out and infects other areas.)

3. Be respectful of nature when you dispose of items such as pool chemicals, paints, solvents, cleaning and car washing solutions.

4. Consider the benefits of an organic garden as opposed to adding more pesticides and fertilizers to the earth.

5. Invite nature into your home by incorporating bird baths, bird feeders, humming bird feeders, or plants and flowers that attract butterflies, dragon flies, lady bugs, etc. (Note: if there is an absence of wildlife in your area, this could be telling you something. Animals are innately attracted to healthy energy, and will often avoid areas with unhealthy energy.)

6. No matter what condition your home is currently in, love and appreciate it for what it is. Thank your home verbally and energetically---through space clearings. Take heated or intense conversations outside (i.e., a long walk on the beach), as a way of keeping the energy within your home at a higher vibration.

Crisis As Opportunity: The Chinese symbol (calligraphy) for the word "crisis" is the same as the symbol for "opportunity." It is seen as an invitation to create something favorable out of an unfavorable occurrence. A fire (whether you are directly or indirectly affected) can be seen as an opportunity for a spiritual and structural renovation of your home.

More Good Stuff from the San Diego Rep Theatre

I enjoy going to the theatre and, in particular, like the productions by the San Diego Rep.

I recently had the opportunity to see two more of their shows as part of our season tickets.

Ain't Misbehavin' was a wonderful musical production featuring music by the famed Fats Waller. Lots of singing talent in the 4 stars of this show that has been around for years.

More recently I enjoyed the comedy The Bible: The Complete Word of God. The show was lots of fun, with some great comedy, terrific lines (not all, but most), humorous songs, and lots of poking fun at the Bible. We saw the show on the second night and the actors were still getting their feet wet. There were a few goofs, but all in all it was well worth the time and filled with lots of laughs. Worth going to see...and you still have time to get tickets before their next production Sweet Sixteen.

If you haven't been to the Rep, you are missing some great talent and well done theatre. And ticket prices are very reasonable.

San Diego Fires

I have not been writing as much recently becuase of needing to focus on business.

But now the bigger concern are the many fires raging throughout our area. My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who has been displaced, and worse, have lost their homes. There are no words...

We have not had to leave yet but the risk is still there. It is scary, and frustrating, knowing that we cannot do anything except watch and listen. The photos are horrific and the devastation is indescribable.

My Thoughts on Blogging

As you know from reading my blog here, I write quite a bit. And as I have mentioned in the past, I write on several other blogs as well.

My Relocation A to Z blog focuses on relocation issues for buyers and sellers, especially those moving here to Carlsbad and the San Diego area.

My First Time Buyer Central blog is for buyers, new and experienced. Those interested in Carlsbad homes (and other areas) will find lots of useful information about the process and issues to be aware of in our housing market.

I also write on the ActiveRain network, which is for professionals in the business as well as consumers (community articles for buyers and sellers are found on Localism).

I see a tremendous value in blogs for consumers who are buying and selling. It's a way for me to share information about the buying and selling process. It is also a great vehicle for sharing community information, for those who live in the area as well as those who are considering a move here. And consumers can get to know me through my blogs.

Now and then I like to poke fun at various things, and recently wrote a tongue-in-cheek article about why I don't like blogging. There is a tad bit of sarcasm there, of course, since I really do enjoy it (or I would NOT have written over 1000 posts in the last year on my 4 blogs).

Art Splash 2007 in Carlsbad

I recently wrote about a list of many fairs and festivals occurring in the San Diego area - here's the post in case you missed it.

My wife and I went to Art Splash in Carlsbad yesterday - what a terrific (and FREE) event, which benefits the art programs in the Carlsbad schools. We didn't get there on Saturday and missed the Taste of Carlsbad, but yesterday was very cool. Dozens of art vendors (paintings, sculpture, jewelry, pottery), violin makers, rock balancing, a small circus and much more.

Of course the highlight was the chalk art (just one example shown above) and there were several dozen artists participating.

Wow, It's Raining

I woke up early this morning to a new sound - it was raining, and fairly heavily.

For those of you who have lived here for a long time perhaps this seems odd that I would even bother to mention this, but for an East Coast boy who is used to regular rain throughout the year (well, except in winter when it is replaced by relentless snow), not having any for - what is it about 7 months? - is hard to get used to. And of course because our drought conditions are pretty significant this was a welcome sign.

I doubt it was enought rain to do much, but it was welcome nonetheless. I understand we are due more on Saturday.

More on Things to Do and Think About

Since my last post business has gotten incredibly busy - good news, I think, but I suspect you can tell since nothing has shown up here for some time...not a good thing.

I have been very busy showing property although buyers are still taking lots of time to ponder their options or even to decide if now is the right time to buy.

Many of the buyers are coming from out of town and want to move here either permanently or to have second homes. With the weather we have been having in last week or so can you blame them? So much of the writing, when I have had time, has been about things to do.

The last article about fairs and festivals was fun to write, and I am making an effort to get to some of these. One was the Rancho Santa Fe Art Affaire - you can read about that here.

I was out previewing some properties for some buyers from New Mexico and from Arizona, and decided to stop by the new Crossings at Carlsbad golf course which just opened in early August. This public golf course has been in the making for 17 years, wit lots of controversy (the over-run on the budget, for one). Here are my impressions.

Part of the business has to do with a colleague of mine who is out of town for several weeks and who asked me to cover his business, which I am happy to do. He is a surfing enthusiast and headed to Bali for 2 and 1/2 weeks of surfing. I can't imagine. But while I am not a surfer I have written a couple of things recently - one post was about surfing here along the North County coast in general (stop by to listen to the popular Beach Boys tune). The other was about the Surfing Museum in Oceanside, which was great fun to visit and worth a trip if you haven't been there.

I've written quite a bit here about life in California after moving here from Boston. I recently wrote more on my thoughts on this topic - check out my musings...

It's hard to believe the Labor Day holiday has passed, all the kids are back in school, the weather is feeling like fall, and another weekend has arrived. Make it a good one.

BTW the Fall Home and Garden Show is being held this weekend at the Del Mar Fairgrounds if you have nothing to do. It's worth a visit...at least once. Hours are Noon to 7 TODAY, 10 - 7 Saturday, and 10 - Sunday.

Don't forget the Wavecrest Woodie Meet (mentioned in a previous post) that occurs Saturday at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas.

I'm partial to Carlsbad because I live here, but San Diego has multiple fairs and festivals in the next couple of months to attend, probably more than one can reasonably expect to visit, and many of them are FREE. These outdoor fairs and festivals cover music, film, theatre, arts and crafts, food and much more. Here's a PARTIAL list of the things I discovered - I won't tell you that this is complete but it provides a pretty good range of things to do in different towns.

WIFI on the Beach

What could be better than sitting on the beach in Carlsbad, watching the surfers (yep, I’m dreaming not participating), enjoying the warm sunny weather, and blogging…or checking email. Or while you are sitting at your picnic table? Or in your tent or RV?

Sounds pathetic, doesn’t it? I suppose so, at least for those who can tear themselves away from their computers and PDAs. But for those who can’t, move over Starbucks!

There is WIFI at many of the California beaches, including South Carlsbad State Beach (within 150 – 200 feet of the Lifeguard Headquarters in the park) for folks at the picnic areas, campgrounds, in their RV or cabins, and yes, if you are on the beach close enough (and can see with all the glare). Some other local San Diego beaches with WIFI include Torrey Pines (La Jolla) and San Eljio (Cardiff).

AT & T is teamed up with the park system to provide WIFI service in multiple state parks at the beaches and elsewhere, such as the Anzo-Borrego desert (I believe this actually began back in 2005). And as long as you have wireless capability and are within a couple of hundred feet of an AT & T hotspot, things should be golden.

~ Celebrate the Season of Change ~

The transition from late Summer into early Autumn is known as the season of "fluctuation." Fluctuation provides the opportunity for change because the universal energies are in the process of shifting. When energy is in a state of movement and flow you can use the momentum to release the things that aren't working in your life, while you open the door for new opportunities to enter. In fact, some Feng Shui Masters see fluctuation as a bridge that connects your past with your future.

Water = Winter
Wood = Spring
Fire = Summer
Earth = Fluctuation
Metal = Autumn/Fall

There are two periods of fluctuation per calendar year:

Summer into Autumn
Winter into Spring.

The transition (and movement) of energy also applies to your home . . .

Hallways:

Hallways are conduits for energy. They help to guide energy from one part of the house to other areas, giving a home a sense of flow. Hallways can also be used to connect, shift and, in some cases, separate the function of one space from another. For instance, the main living areas (kitchen, family room, living room) from the bedrooms.

It's important to treat hallways as rooms rather than non-rooms to keep a sense of connectivity. This can be accomplished through the use of artwork or photographs (creating a photo gallery), color, plants, area rugs/runners, furniture and windows. The secret is creating balance---Empty hallways cause energy to move too quickly and harshly which can have a destablizing effect. Hallways with too much furniture or clutter will cause the energy to become stagnant which can make you feel blocked or stuck in life.

As A REALTOR(R) I had my "formal" agent picture taken a few years ago, under duress. It's on my business card and other places where a more formal look is probably important. I don't especially like it and it seems too formal and conservative (guess that is the New England in me). I used it on my blogs but it seemed kinda stuffy. Maybe not.

I have had a lot of comments on my photo, especially after people meet me in person, so that, in part, prompted me to take a more relaxed picture. Here is it (no, I am NOT a surfer, at least not yet). I call it my "more relaxed summer look." It works for now, until I decide it's time for another business photo.

The Ultimate Art Fair in Rancho Sante Fe

The Event

If you are an art/crafts lover, then I would seriously consider attending the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild's A Finer Art Affaire on Sunday, September 9th 10 AM to 5 PM. It should be a wonderful event with 150 booths of fine art, plus art demonstrations, Children's Art Show, music and food. It may not be the ultimate art fair, but if last year's was any indication, this one should be terrific. (photo taken from their website and available as a downloadable flyer)

The fair is held in the two parks located in the heart of Rancho Santa Fe, across the street from the historic Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. The address is 6004 Paseo Delicias in the village.

Indigo Grill in San Diego's Little Italy

The Indigo Grill in the Little Italy section of San Diego is a real find, in my opinion. I have eaten there a number of times and just had dinner again this past Friday. I decided it was time to write a bit more about this terrific restaurant.

Indigo Grill features the creative cuisine of one of San Diego's better known chefs, Deborah Scott (the restaurant is part of the Cohn group of restaurants that also includes favorites like Island Prime and Kemo Sabe). With a vibrant, eclectic, upscale atmosphere and indoor and outdoor dining, this is a terrific place to gather after work or on the weekend after touring around Little Italy.

This place is NOT for the faint of appetite, as the servings are VERY GENEROUS. I mean it. Unless you have a huge appetite I expect you will find that having both an appetizer and an entree will do you in (or you will have a snack to take home for the next day). And if you like fairly straightforward, uncreative dishes this may be an overload for you.

Don't let that keep you away, as the creative, flavorful, exotic food with tastes "from the artic region to the South of Mexico" (quote from their website) is a winner. I would say Deborah Scott is a master of combining foods, seasonings and presentation on beautiful dishes to provide you with an all-around delicious and visually-appealing dining experience.

We (a party of 4) enjoyed the Pipian Crusted Brie with jalopeno jelly, scallion flatbread, mole negro, honey-roasted garlic and grilled nopales. The trout dish a friend had was outstanding, as was the salmon. I had the wild mushroom ravioli for my entree and it was excellent.

Sitting outdoors, especially when the weather is warm, is nice. But keep in mind you are on a city street corner so there is some noise. But quite frankly I can't say it bothers me much.

So check it out - I'd be curious to hear what you think.

A Heartwarming Story of Adversity

I read an article in the Coast News for August 10 and wanted to share it in case you did not see it. Perhaps you have even heard of this 17-year-old from Del Mar.

ROY PERKINS is an amazing young man and a tremendous swimmer. He has several world records and a bunch of American and Pan-American records as well. And he has set his sights on winning GOLD in Beijing at the Paralympics.

What makes his especially impressive is that he was born without hands or feet. I can't even imagine...

Happenings on August 11

Two noteworthy events are occurring today, August 11, in North County San Diego in Carlsbad.

First, the much anticipated opening of The Crossings at Carlsbad public golf course occurs. The original opening on August 4 was pushed back due to a small plane crash from Palomar Airport, which damaged the greens and the fairway near hole 3. Residents quickly signed up and filled the available spots for the "Carlsbad Residents Days" on August 5 and 10. The official Grand Opening ceremonies are delayed for a few weeks in order for the grass to grow in. This 18-hole $68 million golf course has been much anticipated, although not without controversy given the time it took to build, the budget, and other issues.

Second, art fanciers (such as myself) will appreciate the opening of the new show at the well-known Cannon Art Gallery (adjacent to the public library in South Carlsbad). "Natural Connections" features artists Joanne Hayakawa (ceramic sculptures) and Gail Roberts (paintings). Both are Professors at San Diego State University. The reception is from 5 - 7 pm. There will be Family Open Studios at the gallery courtyard with opportunities for children and adults to make their own creations on Saturday September 15 from 11 - 2 PM. FREE to the public.

East Coast Meets West

I am a big fan of San Diego (well, obviously, given this blog), and I often have commented on comparisons of my former life on the East Coast vs. now. Some of that is humorous, and some more serious. That, naturally, is true whenever you move from one part of the country to another, which I have done several times. I expect you have experienced this yourself.

For some reason (perhaps some recent experiences, and the pending visit from a friend who has NEVER been to California) I felt like writing another article about life here as compared to Boston. Some of it was poking fun, but in part it was to provide an educational experience to those readers who might be thinking about moving here (remember, I am a REALTOR(R) so I sometimes veer off in that direction). I am not necessarily encouraging a mass immigration here...we are crowded enough...but some folks WANT to be here and I am happy to help them learn all about it.

Fun at the Torrey Pines Gliderport in La Jolla

I spent some time at the Torrey Pines Gliderport yesterday, not to go hangliding or paragliding, but simply to learn more about what it all involved, and to enjoy the hangliders on a beautiful day.

If you haven't been here, it really is worth the trip on a nice day. There is something special about watching the hangliders along the bluffs overlooking Black's Beach and the Torrey Pines State Beach. Plus the views up and down the coast are truly amazing.

There is a casual restaurant so you can grab a snack while you enjoy the views. or sign up for lessons in the sport shop - there are several options available depending on your interest (try out the tandem flying with an instructor, perhaps).

A Visual Journey to the Desert Cities - Palm Springs and More

One of the things I really enjoy about living in San Diego (well, besides great weather, great beaches, great people) is the ability to visit other nearby areas that are dramatically different, but a relatively short distance away.

San Diego certainly has a terrific reputation as a destination! I was just in San Francisco for a one day conference. Everyone I met, from those up in Northern California, in the northwest, or from other parts of the country, commented on what a wonderful city San Diego is. I couldn't agree more. But it was neat to have some validation from folks from other areas.

I recently spent two days visiting the desert cities for the first time (there were a number of people that were shocked I had never been there - guess it is a popular destination for Southern Californians as well) and wanted to share a few impressions, including some photos.

The contrast of the mountains and the desert is remarkable. Coming over the San Jacinto Mountains from the San Bernardino National Forest on the Pines to Palms Highway (Route 74) is a terrific way to enter the desert - the views of the Coachella Valley from the road at the peak of the mountains is incredible and well worth the extra travel time (and it affords you great photographic opportunities) as opposed to taking the 15 (north) to the 215 to the 10 (east).

Yes, it was hot, but it's the desert. When we arrived it was 111 (about 95 up in the mountains), which was such a contrast from the 78 degrees we left behind in Carlsbad, so you have to be prepared for the heat (have lots of water available - it's easy to get dehydrated without realizing it). There are lots of resorts to chose from (we stayed at the Westin Mission Hills) with golf, swimming and other activities and the rates are pretty good if you go during off season.

Shopping is abundant, although there are fewer stores open, especially on Sundays, during the off season. Lots of great restaurants too (we loved Johannes Restaurant in Palm Springs on South Indian Canyon Drive), although some of them are closed in off season too - so call ahead. We also enjoyed Roy's in Rancho Mirage - a great seafood place that oozes Hawaiian fusion (yes, it's a chain - there's one in La Jolla - but it was well worth it). The La Quinta Resort in La Quinta is very charming and a great place for lunch on the terrace (there are several restaurants to choose from).

There seem to be lots of tourist things to do, although we did not have the time. The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens (Palm Desert/Indian Wells) is supposedly a great place to visit and really get a feel for the animals, plants and flowers that inhabit the desert (some of them quite rare). I understand that the aerial tram from the desert up to the top of the mountains is quite a journey, with fabulous views. Next time, perhaps.

A good number of people own time shares or second homes in the area, and it definitely has the feel of a tourist/vacation/second home destination. It's worth the trip if you have not been there. The winter may be a better time if you don't like heat, but be prepared for higher prices, tourists and more residents (who often vacate during the hot summer months).

Spas, Pools and More in San Diego

Pools, spas and water features are a very popular aspect of the outdoor landscape in many Southern California homes.

I don’t have the statistics, but between fountains, spas, hot tubs, koi ponds, and pools it seems a huge percentage of San Diego homes are equipped with at least one of these features, and some pretty elaborate ones, too.

I have had personal experience with Hallmark Pools and Spas and recommend them highly. We hired them to design and build our in-ground spa (see photo - BTW the ducks did not come with the spa, they just showed up the day we filled it) here in Carlsbad, complete with a water feature, 8 jets at varying heights, and approximately 10 X 14 feet in size. They did a great job with the design and execution and we have recommended them a number of times.

There are a number of other companies around that provide a range of design and building services for spas, pools and more. I can’t comment on these since I have no experience, but thought the list of a few other vendors may be useful. A Google search will yield even more.

Surfing in the San Diego Area

One of the things that was very noticeable to me when I first moved out here was the amount of surfing -sure, there is surfing back in Boston, especially on Cape Cod (even a few diehards in the dead of winter), but nothing as pervasive as you find here. It seems to be the most popular pastime.

I imagine those who have lived here for years, or who grew up here, don't really notice it all that much, or think much about it. Anyhow, since I have paid more attention to the surfing culture and the influence it has had on various communities, I wrote an article about it the other day on my ActiveRain blog.

I'd be curious to hear from surfers out there.

A Boost to the North County Transportation Woes

Getting around in North County continues to be a challenge. Traffic is the issue, of course, and now that summer is here it has gotten worse.

The freeway tends to be more of a parking lot since we had the San Diego County Fair a few weeks ago, the racing season at Del Mar is currently in full swing, and there are more tourists (and local residents whose kids are not in school) out enjoying the terrific weather and all the things to do. I avoid the freeway at all costs, especially at rush hour (which seems to be rush hours...about 6 of them or more a day) unless I feel like sitting in traffic (link is to traffic report).

There are a good number of people who rely on public transportation - some to avoid traffic and parking issues, and others because they don't have cars (hard to imagine in this state where the auto reigns supreme).

Options for transportation here in North County are fairly good, actually. There is the Coaster (the train that runs between Oceanside and San Diego) and Amtrak (not really a commuter train but if you need to get up to LA and some other coastal towns this is the way to go). There is also the Breeze (the buses) although because it supposedly is so simple to get around (it's a breeze) they don't refer to them as buses but just by the name.

The NEW ADDITION to the transportation system that will help locals and visitors, especially those going east and west (yep, those roads, like 78, get real ugly too), is the new light rail line running from Escondido to Oceanside - the SPRINTER. The lines are already under construction and expected to be completed in December 2007.

And of course you can always travel by bike, skate board, roller blades, on foot, or motorcycle. And downtown San Diego offers other options, like those bicycle taxi things in the gas lamp district. But I shouldn't complain - there are other cities in the world with far worse traffic than us - like Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Bangkok, Tokyo and more. Have you been to Atlanta or Washington, DC lately?

The Del Mar Race Track

I attended my first races at the Del Mar Race Track yesterday. I haven't been to the races for many years, and never to the Del Mar track, so it was great fun to see this landmark, also the site of the San Diego County Fair and many other expositions. We got to enjoy the Stretch Run/Infield area, as I was there for a real estate networking event with ActiveRain folks and the Sellsius Blog Tour USA.

There are a number of choices of where to sit, depending on whether you want a seat or not, would like to dine, and where. Admission ranges from $5 to $25 - you can buy tickets at the track or on-line.

Parking seemed pretty adequate (although I understand that Opening Day on the 18th was mobbed). Parking is $8 but you can also Valet Park for $20.

Racing season this year (with the new PolyTrack to provide increased safety for the horses and riders) runs from July 18 through September 5. It's worth the trip if you have not been before.

Route 101, a.k.a.The Coastal Highway

Where I live in North County San Diego there are 2 major roads heading north and south.

The 5 is the freeway (I still sometimes call it the highway - a throwback to my many years back East where that is what the big roads are called), of course, which I travel occasionally into the city and when driving to Los Angeles (I generally end up taking it to the 405 up in Orange County).

The other is Route 101, called the Coast or Coastal Highway, that is a more local road along the ocean, running from Oceanside to Torrey Pines (I suppose technically it keep going but has other names). The road actually runs most of the west coast and up in Los Angeles is more of a freeway itself - it's known by a variety of names depending on where you are.

In any case, I have driven the entire length of the road here and, like Route 1, it has an amazing array of things to do along it, in addition to some terrific ocean views (especially near Carlsbad Village, south Encinitas, Cardiff, briefly in north Del Mar and in south Del Mar as you approach Torrey Pines). I find it a better local road to travel if I don't need to go far, and when traffic on the 5 is really ugly it is much faster, despite the lights. And sometimes commuting as a slower pace (unlike 80 mph on the 5) is a good deal. Plus it is another one of the interesting things to do in San Diego.

Things to Do Outside of San Diego

I apologize for not including more posts in the last week or so. Seems like my busy life has gotten busier, and I have been traveling, too. But that is not a good excuse. Being without Internet access for days at a time, however, really puts a crimp in my writing - and blogging from my Blackberry is just not doable.

Anyhow...I spent some time in Santa Barbara for a business meeting last Thursday. So for those of you who have not visited, I highly recommend it. I wrote a post about my visit and included some photos, and it's only a 3.5 hour drive (without traffic). Absolutely worth a visit.

I also spent the weekend in Los Angeles, just 2 hours north of us. Such a change from San Diego, and so much to do there as well.

I spent a good part of a day at the Getty Museum, which I highly recommend. I also visited the Santa Monica pier, Bergamot Center where all the art galleries are, and the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica (more on all that later).

Yep, the traffic is worse now that summer is here and the tourists are around, but if you plan your time it's not bad. I love all there is to do here, but having the option to visit another great city is wonderful.

ArtSplash 2007

As part of my exploration of things to do in San Diego (and in this case, because I live here and love things to do in Carlsbad) I wanted to share some information about the 2007 ArtSplash, a very popular event in North County. Folks come down from Orange County as well to attend this event.

2007 ArtSplash will be held for 2 days on September 22 and 23 on Armada Drive just behind the Flower Fields off Palomar Airport Road (and east of the freeway).

A major focus of this event is the age-old European tradition of chalk art street painting - I have not been before but I understand it is QUITE impressive. Other activities include fine art displays and demonstrations, hands-on art activities for all, stage and street entertainment (the Fern Street Circus will perform on Sunday) and terrific food (the Taste of Carlsbad will occur on Saturday from 2 - 5 PM).

This event benefits the arts programs in the Carlsbad Schools.

Live Earth Concerts and the Lucky #7

Things to do in San Diego in July

The longer I live here the more I find to do in and around San Diego. The fabulous weather, of course, leads one to explore mostly outdoor activities, whether it be the beaches, the Del Mar Race Track (currently the County Fair is in full swing but ending soon on July 4), or other major tourist attractions. But there is lots of other stuff to do as well. And with summer here, there is an even larger list of things to do in San Diego.

Here's a partial list of my favorites.

Fourth of July Celebrations - lots of opportunities, even though the actual holiday is at a strange time. La Jolla Cove, San Diego, Hornblower Cruises, Legoland

Art, Wine and Jazz Festival July 7- local artists demonstrating on canvas, palette and sound, at the Bernardo Winery.

Theatre - the Starlight presents OKLAHOMA; the Buddy Holly Story is at the Welk Theatre; the San Diego Rep (I have written about their terrific productions before) presents Dirty Rotten Scoundrels;

Horse Racing - starts July 18 and runs through September 5 at the Del Mar Race Track.

Taste of Fallbrook on July 27

Tennis - The Acura Tennis Classic at La Costa Spa and Resort. The resort also hosts its Spa Under the Stars events on Thursdays with wine, appetizers and reduced-cost spa treatments in their courtyard.

Music - TGIF Jazz in the Park every Friday from 6 - 8 PM in one of Carlsbad's parks (FREE); Jazz on the Green concerts on Fridays in July at the Four Seasons in Carlsbad.

Baseball - the Padres continue their play all summer. Why not attend when a "favorite" opposing team is playing?

We Live in a Mobile World

Before I moved to San Diego I had traveled to California quite a bit for business and pleasure. So I was pretty used to the traffic and all the freeways - back East there is really nothing to compare to the roads here in terms of size and traffic volume (BTW we called them highways on the East Coast!). Wow - there are 21 lanes of cars at the junction of the 5 adn the 805 at La Jolla. That's impressive!

Once I moved here it really hit home, however, about how we live in a mobile world, and how dependent we are on our cars. I know that is nothing none of you readers don't already know. It is not only the volume of cars (more cars in LA than people I've been told), but the distances people travels, the speed at which they drive, the number of expensive cars, and so on. People often drive rather than walking, even short distances - I remember the Steve Martin film "LA Story" poking fun at this and other traffic related stuff (e.g., the electronic signs along the freeways in LA).

One of the things I really like about being here is the easy access to beaches. You can park just about anywhere near our favorite beach and for free. I expect folks here take that for granted - it really IS much more car friendly - but back East this is a rarity. Even lots of beaches are not public, and finding parking is often a challenge, and pricey (unless you are a resident).

But it is much more than us and our cars on the road.

We have mobile pet grooming - I see these services all over the place. There is mobile car detailing (that's another thing I have noticed - seems folks here are much more into caring for their cars, inside and out - car washes everywhere, getting you car detailed regularly, and so on). Mobile advertising is becoming much more prevalent - magnetic car signs, license plates, painted signs on car windows, the big mobile sign trucks.

Certainly drive through fast food is EVERYWHERE and has been for years, but now it seems just about every type of food imaginable can be obtained without leaving your car. There is drive-through coffee, drive-through liquor stores, drive-through pharmacies and drive-through groceries. Food deliveries by car have become even more popular, and higher end restaurants will deliver - or a chef will come to your home and cook for you. And you can have your pet food delivered too!

The list goes on. I have not seen them but there are drive though funeral parlors if you want a quick viewing. And there are mobile veterinarians and mobile doctors and mobile dentists. Vehicles will come pick up the elderly, the disabled, your kids for day care, your dogs for doggy day care. Your dry cleaning is now mobile - you can drop if off from your car or have it delivered to you.

I find it fascinating...and I know this is just a small list of the mobile services and products out there. Who knows what will be next?

Did you know that the smaller the bedroom, the better? It’s true. A smaller bedroom suggests more intimacy and closeness between a couple.

2. The position of the bed within the bedroom:

Make sure that your bed is not positioned under anything heavy, such as a large ceiling fan or lighting feature. (Heavy = weight & stress which leads to arguments.) Along these same lines, do not site your bed directly below a structural beam, particularly one that runs the length of the ceiling and down the center of the bed, "dividing" a couple. It’s also not favorable (for love or health) to have your bed-head share a wall in which a bathroom or commode resides on the opposite side.

3. The use of symbolism within the bedroom:

The bedroom is the best place to display happy photos of you and your partner. Or select other "romantic" artwork—such as pieces that depict love and partnership rather than, say, a lone individual. (Even a neutral image like two palm trees, side-by-side, would work.) If you do have a larger Master Bedroom, create an intimate seating area for two, or bring in a love seat. (At the very least, move the single chair because it’s sending out the wrong message.) The objective is to create an energetic "pattern" that suggests couplehood & partnership and that will nurture you now and in the future. Enjoy!

New Art Exhibit at the Cannon Art Gallery in Carlsbad

The Cannon Art Gallery opened another winning show last night, June 21, with the annual exhibit and contest of works by Carlsbad City Employees and their families.

This show is definitely worth a visit before it closes in late July.

What is so wonderful about this exhibit is that is showcases amateur as well as professional works by employees of the city and members of their families, across all age groups including children.

The full breadth of artistic mediums is explored including photography, prints, drawings, oil paintings, watercolors, sculpture, pottery and ceramics, quilting and much more.

There is no admission fee to see this terrific show of more than 200 works of art at all levels.

I wrote recently about the Plein Air Brunch Fundraiser at the Gallery, just another example of the exciting activities that take place at this Carlsbad gallery.

Tastes is What it is All About

Nope, the title is not a misspelling or a grammatical mistake.

TASTES is a fairly new restaurant in Encinitas that I just discovered. Actually, I knew it was there, and have been driving by it for the last couple of years on the Coast Highway. But like so many other places I see, there just has not been an opportunity to stop in to learn more.

I finally did yesterday. And I had a chance to meet one of the owner's parents who have been very involved with the restaurant and who gave me a great tour...and sparked my enthusiasm for trying the place out in the future.

Tastes is a total wine experience. They have a retail operation, with a great wine selection of reds and white from California, Spain, Italy and elsewhere, thanks to co-owner Mark Dubiel. But there's more.

Tastes is also a fine restaurant (and since I came at lunch time and they only serve dinner, I have not yet had the pleasure of eating there...but I will soon, now that I saw the menu), with a great selection of dishes prepared by an award winning chef, Sean Fisher (who has also catered for most of the top rock stars around with "Behind the Scenes Catering").

There are new dishes added weekly and others drop off, so you have an ever-changing opportunity to enjoy wonderful food. And, the added bonus is that they offer a selection of wine pairings with each dish to best compliment the food. You can dine outside as well on the back side of the restaurant.

Tastes also offers a series of wine flights so you get to try highly recommend wines and decide what you like for yourself. And, of course, you can then purchase the bottles at very reasonable prices to enjoy at home (or have them uncork and decant one for you for dinner).

Tastes is definitely on my list now to enjoy for dinner, and I plan to do so soon. They have lots of regulars and have become quite popular, so reservations are important for Friday and Saturday nights.

They are located on the east side of the Coast Highway at #641 not far past the Lumberyard. They can be reached at 760-942-9549. Stay tuned for my review once I enjoy dinner there.

Fun at the Playboy Jazz Festival in West Hollywood

The Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in West Hollywood is one of the pre-eminent jazz events on the west coast.

This year's 29th Playboy Jazz Festival was no exception. I had the pleasure (for the 3rd year in a row) of attending this past Saturday.

The Hollywood Bowl is a great venue...certainly an icon of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. The weather was perfect, the crowd was in a party mood, and the entertainment was top notch. Some I enjoyed more than others, of course. We took a fabulous picnic and had a great dinner, as most folks do...what could better than great live jazz outdoors (e.g., Chris Botti, Angelique Kidjo) in a terrific setting with amazing views of the Hollywood hills and a wonderful sound system?

If you have not been, take the opportunity to go next year, or attend one of the many other events this summer at the Hollywood Bowl.

It's Fair Weather!

Lots of folks know this already, but in case you don't, it's fair weather...the San Diego County Fair is back at the Del Mar Fairgrounds (the fair has been there since 1936).

The fair runs from June 8 to July 4 with some closed dates (June 11-12, 18-19 and 25). Admission is open 11 AM to 11 PM Friday and Saturday, 11 AM to 10 PM other days.

Tickets at $12 for adults, $6 for those age 62+, $6 for children 6 - 12 and FREE to those lucky enough to be 5 or younger.

Of course this means the traffic on the 5 becomes horrendous at times...more than the usual, coupled with the increased car volume we see in the summertime anyhow. So be prepared!

There is an incredible array of stuff to see, do, taste, listen to, and try. And crowds of folks to watch.

Bungee jumping, ostrich racing, onion bowling, all sorts of deep fried stuff, the Gym Class Heroes band, plenty of animals, contests, and so on, and on, and on.

I haven't been this year, yet, but I always enjoy county fairs, having been to them in Minnesota, the Boston area, in Ohio and elsewhere where I have lived over the years. Lots of fun no matter what your age.

The website has all the information you need to decide what to do and when, or just take a day and go and simply experience all the fair has to offer. Expect the crowds, but that's part of the fun.

Take a Visit to the Art Community of Laguna Beach

One of the neat things about living in Southern California is that, in addition to great weather most of the time (hmmm, has June gloom decided to move on? Let's hope so), there are lots of things to do in San Diego...within the county as well as within a hour or so.

A quick drive up the coast to Laguna Beach is one example. I can get there in about 45 minutes from my home in Carlsbad (not much longer than getting to downtown San Diego), unless the traffic is really horrendous, and like other coastal towns it is beautiful, with lots to do and see.

Laguna Beach has a world-renowned reputation as an art colony and has been one for decades. So if that sort of thing is of interest to you, it is definitely worth a trip for a day or perhaps a weekend. There are lots of events related to the arts during the year (art fairs, The Sawdust Festival, The Pageant of the Masters, The Festival of Arts), as well as a bounty of art galleries, shops, and restaurants.

Neighborhoods...Maybe, Maybe Not!

As a fairly new resident in these parts (well, now 2 years, but still feeling like I am learning my way around), it has been fun discovering new neighborhoods and communities.

Some of that comes about simply by accident, or by driving to a destination downtown, along the beach, or simply exploring. Some results from my business as a REALTOR covering North County, primarily along the coast, when I am out showing homes.

There are some areas that have names that are not, in the strict sense, neighborhoods. Just as in any major city, San Diego has these as well. The names are pretty indicative of what's there, or the history. They have a different feel to those I am accustomed to in Boston, but there are distinct nonetheless.

Here are some "neighborhoods" I've found and explored:

Oldtown

Marina

The Gaslamp District - everyone knows about this, and it really IS a neighborhood, with more to do (shopping, eating, drinking) than there is time to do it.

Restaurant Row - there is one in Cardiff, along the beach between Cardiff and Solana Beach, and another one in San Marcos (with more than 20 restaurants) - there may be others I have yet to find

Furniture Row - also in San Marcos - a myriad of various sorts of stores for, you guessed, furniture - indoor, outdoor, office, formal, casual, teak, contemporary, designer, and so on.

Car Country - in Carlsbad, adjacent to the 5 and off Palomar Airport Road

The Barrio - near old Carlsbad

The Walking District in Cardiff

The Composer District in Cardiff

Del Mar Beach Colony

Little Italy - downtown near the airport, with lots of newish condos, restaurants, and shopping

Windansea - in La Jolla

Banker's Bill - downtown just east of the 5

Balboa Park

Birdrock - also in La Jolla

Oceanside Redevelopment District

Leucadia - not just a neighborhood in Encintas but a pretty cool, funky area to visit.

The list could go on, but is pretty striking how different these areas all are. Some are commercial, others are residential. It will be fun to continue to learn about new areas.

Not About San Diego

This is NOT about San Diego. But since I live here, it's worth mentioning, as least in my opinion.

Want something to do for a weekend? Have you been up the Central Coast of California, from San Luis Obispo to Big Sur? If you haven't it is definitely worth your time. The views are amazing, and while I already have a great appreciation for all that California offers in terms of scenery, THIS was an eye opener.

I just posted an article about a part of my very recent car trip to San Francisco, via the coast to Monterey. It was such a great visual experience I will may probably share more photos just for fun (even though I shared a link to some photos in my post the other day). We'll see.

Back Home Again

We are back home again, after a 5 day trip to San Francisco (SFO) by car. We left early Thursday morning and drove up the coast to Monterey (if you have not been along Route 1 to Big Sur, it is truly an amazing trip with incredible views).

We stayed over night there with my cousin, then arrived in SFO mid afternoon on Friday. Took in a number of sites including Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower, some great restaurants (of which SFO excels - Millenium and Frascati for dinner, Herbivore and Canteen for breakfast), then drove on Sunday south to wine country at Paso Robles (several hours north east of LA) where we stopped at J. Lohr and Tobin James (our favorite). About 1200 miles all total. Gas topped out at $4.59 for premium along the Big Sur coast - we are lucky here!!

Making a trip such as this made me realize, even more so, how incredible California is in terms of the diversity of geography, coastal views (the picture was taken south of Big Sur), towns, weather, people, and the agricultural offerings.

Dinner at Vivace in Carlsbad - A Memorable Evening

Dinner at Vivace, at the Four Seasons in Carlsbad, is a memorable evening. It comes at a price, of course, so the faint of heart, or those with a slim pocketbook, may find it a bit beyond their comfort level (it is easy to spend $50 - $60 per person, not including wine or dessert, but then we ARE there for pampering aren't we?).

And, for most of us, I expect, it really is for a special evening - a birthday, anniversary, gift - and not for everyday dining. Too rich for my taste buds on a daily basis, but they certainly appreciate the creativity, flavors, food combinations and plating that emerge from the kitchen, under the expert guidance of Chef Bruce Logue. Yes, the restaurant (partial photo at left) IS in a hotel, but you can't go wrong at the Four Seasons, at least in my experiences there, in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and elsewhere. We started our evening last Saturday (a birthday celebration) in the lounge to enjoy a drink before our reservation.

While the lounge is attractive I much prefer to sit out on the terrace to enjoy the views of the ocean in the distance, but it was a tad chilly. I will say that I am not fond of lounges that provide live music other than quiet jazz (sorry, that's MY preference), so while the entertainer had a good voice, it was too loud, with very predictable music, and just not something that added to the ambiance of the room. It actually was, for me, more an annoyance than a pleasure. The service was attentive and friendly (but flavored popcorn for table snacks?? Not up to their usual goodies, perhaps due to the holiday weekend)

The attractive dining room is rather large and divided into several dining areas, and beautifully decorated. Just past the Maitre D's desk is one such dining area...however, it feels like being in a hallway and not part of the restaurant. Don't sit there if you can help it - it feels a bit like an overflow area and lacks personality. Again, my opinion. The rest of the dining areas are much more pleasant.

The main dining room has a wonderful fireplace that is great for wintry evenings, but difficult to snare. Tables are well spaced so you don't feel crowded and the staff are knowledgeable about food preparations, the chef's specialties of the evening, and recommendations about the best things to enjoy based on the market offerings. The wine list is quite good, for a hotel restaurant, and the menu is eclectic in its offerings. There are some vegetarian offerings and I know they will assist diners with particular food allergies or particular needs, including vegan.

My Ahi tuna dish was fabulous, as were the other dishes the rest of our party had - a wonderful calamari appetizer, spectacular fresh pasta with peas, and a flavorful rack of lamb, to name a few. Desserts looked very appealing but the stomach rebelled at more food being consumed.

Vivace provides an elegant Italian style spot in North County to do it up right and celebrate. The views are magnificent from the lobby (see photo, bottom right) and the terrace, and you will feel pampered from the moment you arrive in your car until your departure. The staff are friendly and helpful, and clearly wish to accommodate your needs, whatever they might be.

Next time a special occasion warrants a dinner out, it is worth the trip to Vivace in Carlsbad.

My Place Bistrot in La Jolla

I wanted to share another restaurant that I tried recently that was a great find in La Jolla. [photo taken at the Torrfey Pines Hang Gliderport - La Jolla itself is off in the distance - it was not such a nice dya, as you can see]

My Place, a French bistrot at 7777 Girard Avenue in La Jolla (several blocks east of Prospect, between Silverado and Kline), was a delightful find. Quite frankly I am not sure we would have tried it, or even found out about it, if it weren't for the restaurant discount coupons we found on Restaurant.com. And I certainly did not expect a French place with that name...but what a great surprise.

The food was terrific, and a fairly good representation of bistrot food. The interior was charming (due to my mother-in-law accompanying us we opted to eat inside and not out in the sun). The service was attentive, the music was all French, and one could surely imagine dining on the Left Bank in Paris (the wait person we had that night WAS French although I understand that is not true of all staff). But who cares.

What was especially nice, in addition to good food, is that it was friendly, pleasantly decorated, and off the main drag in La Jolla that tends to be somewhat pretentious and overdone. And a bit on the touristy side for my taste.

I don't have a photo since I did not have my camera (my bad...). Next time. And there WILL be a next time. I recommend you try it out for a casual dinner of good food that is well priced and a good value, considering the town it is is.

Hairspray is Coming to San Diego

The broadway hit musical and winner of 8 Tony Awards in 2003 is coming to San Diego June 5 - 10, at the Civic Theatre at 3rd and B Street.

If you have NOT seen Hairspray, you really should. Based on the hit movie of the same name by John Waters (1988), the musical is a rollicking combo of great old (50s and 60s) and new songs, dance, social commentary (integration, or lack of, in Baltimore in the early 60s)and generally just a good time.The play is pretty true to the original story line (I saw the play first) from the movie, which was good to see - so see one or the other first, depending on your preference.

Tickets are now available through TicketMaster or 1-619-220-TIXS, or the Civic Theatre Box Office at 1-619-570-1100. ($20 - $72).

Jazz Festival in the Gaslamp Quarter

In 2 weeks (Memorial Weekend), on May 26, you have an outstanding opportunity to listen to terrific smooth jazz in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter (map).

The 32nd Anniversary of the Harrahs' Rincon Smooth Jazz 98.1 Gaslamp Festival takes place from 2 - 10 PM, featuring some of the best known smooth jazz musicians around. In addition to the headliners, like Rick Braun (a fave of mine), Peabo Bryson, Richard Elliott, Mindi Abair, and Norman Brown, there will be live music at 30 different locations in the area.

Gates open at 1 PM and you must be 21 (and have a ticket) to attend.

Tickets are available and may be purchased on-line ($40 + fee for on-line, but I believe you can get them at other locations right now for slightly less money, such as Staples).

Sound like a cool thing to do? Check it out. Expect lots of crowds, challenging parking, and loud music, but a fun time. If you plan to have dinner, though, do so far away from the main venue. The music IS loud. Let's hope for terrific weather!

BlueFire Grill at La Costa Spa in La Costa, Carlsbad, CA

Californians are FAST Drivers

I decided to write some more about my observations of living here in California as compared to my former life in Boston. I haven't done much of this recently, and there are still rambling thoughts about how different it really is, even after being here 2 years.

Californians are FAST drivers. You can't deny it. I noticed it right away when I got here and it is still obvious to me. Now don't get me wrong - I drive pretty fast myself, having spent time in the Midwest (Michigan) where all the roads are straight (not completely, of course) and Boston. The problem in Boston is that the roads are all small and curvy, and traffic gridlock prevents you from driving as fast as you want. So frustrated Bostonians make up for that by being some of the rudest and most aggressive drivers around (I can tell you that Europeans are actually worse).

If you have driven in New England you know these things about Boston drivers:

They ignore stop signs and street lights
They cut in and out without ever using their signals - why bother?
Tailgating is a sport, no matter what your speed
Rotaries are the most fun of all - the first to get around the fastest wins, and who cares about the lanes
Pedestrians take their lives in their hands then they cross the road, which they do wherever and whenever they want, plus they ignore the “walk” and “don’t walk” signs anyhow
Horns and middle fingers are the favorite form of expression, no matter what the situation, and even more vigorously if the driver is at fault
They don’t stop or slow down to let folks pull in from a side road or parking lot
They zoom up the side of the road or on the far side of a waiting line of traffic in order to cut in up front since they don’t want to wait in the line
Left and right turns are made from the wrong lane, and u-turns in the middle of the road holding up traffic or illegally are expected
They pull out into traffic and move across two lanes to get where they want, no matter how it inconveniences everyone else or holds up traffic
And so on. You get the idea

I don't "commute" because of my real estate business, but I am on the freeway a good bit, especially to and from LA fairly regularly, and I can attest to the fact that CA drivers are fast...other than the slowdowns for accidents, highway chases (what's the deal with that??) and huge volumes of traffic at rush hour. People are driving 80 in the slow lane...well, there really isn't a slow lane, since there are so many of them and folks just drive wherever they want and can. But fast drivers are also on the secondary roads. And it's not just young drivers or those with sports cars, but a good percentage of drivers in general (I saw a guy the other day who had to be in his 70s or 80s and he was faster than the best of them)...and on all the roads. And the SUVs are some of the fastest (which, BTW, there are a lot of here - everyone seems to drive a big car or SUV, or a high-end import).

But I like the roads here overall. It's easier to drive fast. And I keep up as best I can.

La Costa is in the LA Times

La Costa is in the LA Times!

The LA Times published an article in their Sunday 4/29 real estate section on La Costa - "Carlsbad's chic 'sister.'" I'm pleased about the article for a couple of reasons. One, it gets this great community (and the San Diego area) in the face of some LA Times readers. Or maybe we don't want them coming down here...hmmm.

Secondly, I got quoted! The writer had called me a few weeks ago, after finding my blogs about La Costa, and wanted to write an article. She asked if I could share some information about the area, the real estate marker, and my insights...which I did....

Brunch at Le Papagayo

I’ve written about Le Papagayo before, on the subject of dinner, but I had my first brunch here yesterday and decided to share that, since this has become a favorite restaurant in the area (I live in Carlsbad but spend lots of time in Encinitas, especially Leucadia. both for my real estate business and for pleasure).

Located along the Coast highway (101) in Leucadia, Le Papagayao fits right in with all that Leucadia is about. Dinner (twice) in the past was great, and brunch was not a disappointment either.

There is a great menu with a wide selection of creative breakfast and brunch dishes that are consistent with the creativity and flavors in the dinner menu. There is seating indoors and outdoors along the 101 or on the side by the parking lot so you can enjoy the scenery while dining. My Neptune Avenue dish was terrific – a 3-egg omelette with shrimp, crab meat, lobster sauce and avocado. Not a bad way to start my Sunday.

The place was almost packed when we arrived around 10, and the flow of people continued in and out while we were there. Friendly, helpful service and great food made for a very enjoyable late morning breakfast. Too bad the sun was not shining, but that’s life along the coast sometimes.

So stop by for brunch sometime. It won’t disappoint. But if you want high end trendy food, with china and silverware, this is NOT your place. But then you wouldn’t want to be in Leucadia anyway.

Have no fear – brunch at the Four Seasons, just a few miles away in Carlsbad, won’t disappoint either, if high-end brunch is your preference.

J'Aime M'Aimer (I love this store)

What? Don’t speak French? It means “I Love M’Aimer”...

M’Aimer (“Love Me”)being a new fashion designs (clothing), art and accessories shop in Leucadia on the 101, next to Le Papagayo, my favorite Leucadia restaurant.

M’Aimer is about a month old and is the brainchild of Nadia Vetter from Australia (who lives in Leucadia). We were having brunch today at Le Papagayo (more on that later) and my wife decided to go take a look. I am not a big shopper but joined her (after I paid the bill!). What a neat store! Cleverly and attractively decorated, with a wide array of women’s clothing (another reason for the appeal to my wife…less for me), accessories and art objects. Much of the clothing is from Thailand and India, in bright colors and comfortable fabrics, and according to my wife and daughter (who joined us for brunch and shopping) the prices are very reasonable.

This is the kind of store you want to see be successful (and KNOW will be) and it works in Leucadia. Not one for fancy, trendy high-end boutiques and designer labels, Leucadia is much more about a funky, quaint beach town which has a good flow of tourists. The community is one that wants to retain the spirit and feel that it has had for years and which attracts, and appeals to, the people who live here.. Shops that fit in will be welcome, but those that do not, will not.

So check it out when you are in the area. It’s about midway between Leucadia Boulevard and La Costa Avenue on the beach side of the 101. I have yet to meet the owner, but hope to some day so I can tell you more about her and the personality behind M’Aimer.

A Rant on Grocery Stores

This is a rant - let me warn you right now. But it might strike a chord with a few of you.

I love living here, in part due to all the great produce and fruits that you have access to. It was decent back East, at least during the spring and summer, but nothing to compare to what we have here. Maybe some people take it for granted cos you are used to it, but it is still wonderful for me.

But shopping for produce at the grocery stores drives me (and my wife) nuts.

First, the quality is often not that great. Clearly the farmer's market is the way to go (and we get there as often as we can - better and fresher produce, more variety, etc.). Henry's (recently purchased by Whole Foods) is pretty good as well, as is Jimbo's. Sometime the quality is good and other times the fruit and vegetables look pretty scary - you have to wonder how they can think people will buy this stuff! The inconsistency is troubling, and so unpredictable. Trader Joe's produce is pretty good too but more expensive.

But what really irks me are the prices. When you do any sort of comparison between what you pay for the identical items at a Vons or Alberstons, vs. getting it at Henry's, for example, it is appalling. It is not unusual to see prices at the big guys almost twice what you pay for elsewhere for the same things, AND for lesser quality. It really grates me, since it happens all the time. Sure, it's easier to just buy the strawberries at Vons for $3.79 a quart rather than make another stop at Henry's to get them for less than half the price. But you start feeling taken advantage of. Man, it starts to get expensive to eat healthily.

Yes, I understand these are big stores with big staffs and big expenses, but you have to wonder.

Does it bug you too? Or am I overreacting here. Just curious.

San Diego Ranks 302nd out of 379

Ouch. Doesn't sound like good news, does it?

Actually, it is good news, relatively speaking. There has been lots of press recently about all the short sales, foreclosures and fraud in the mortgage industry, not to mention the subprime issues we have been hearing so much about (sorry - I'm a REALTOR so this stuff interests me, although these issues can impact our overall economy here in SD, so it affects you too).

The good news is San Diego ranks 302nd out of 379 markets in terms of mortgage fraud. Which means there are 301 markets that are worse. Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic Systems (a Sacramento firm that measures lending risks) goes on to say that we also are 85th on the list of the 100 largest markets. Certainly there is concern about the rate of short sales and foreclosures that we are seeing, with a dramatic increase since 2006, but the news, at least for now, indicates that we are not suffering to the extent that many areas are.

But there is concern that we will see the rates of mortgage fraud rise with the changes that have occurred in housing prices and the increase in foreclosures. Folks that may be in danger of losing their homes through foreclosure are, unfortunately easy prey for criminals who are out to make a quick buck through fraudulent loans and other means.

The San Diego Wild Animal Park

My first visit to the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park was last week. We have passed it a bunch of times heading inland but for a variety of reasons have not made the trip for a visit. My nephews were in town visiting from Michigan and wanted to go so off we went. The weather was perfect, about 75 degrees.

Given the price of tickets ($28.50 for adults, $17.50 for children 3 - 11), and expecting we will be back, we decided to go ahead and get a membership for 1 year (using a $10 off coupon) which gave us 2 free guest passes, plus 4 2-for-1 passes to use during the year. Seemed like a great deal.

The park is about 25 miles inland from the coast, and 35 miles from San Diego, not far off the 15 near Escondido. There is plenty of parking ($6 for members, $8 for nonmembers) with a shuttle bus to get you to the gate unless you want to walk.

We were only there about 3 hours, so we didn't have time to do everything. You can easily spend the better part of the day if you go to all the exhibits (African Aviary was a favorite, along with lions, see the elephant show (lots of fun), go on the safari ride, and so on. Most things are no additional charge but certain attractions cost more. You can also get multiday passes.

The website has all the information you need, and a cool interactive map so you can plan your trip.

My only disappointment was that my digital camera died about 30 minutes after we got there (so, sorry I have limited pics) - no not the batteries, the LCD imaging. So, due to the cost of repairs, I have bought another camera.

If you get a chance to go, do it - worth the trip and different from the San Diego Zoo itself.

Homebuyers' Fair

A Homebuyer's Fair (the 8th annual) will be held on the grounds of Palomar College in Oceanside on June 16th from 10 am until 3 pm.

This is a great resource for homebuyers in North County San Diego, especially if you are a first time home buyer.

Wine Tasting in Carlsbad

The Carlsbad Wine Merchants store, just off Faraday, is a terrific wine store. I'm sure there are others in the San Diego area but this one is tops in my area, as far as I know.

Carlsbad Wine Merchants was recommended to us almost two years ago when we moved here, and we have enjoyed frequenting this growing establishment to learn about and purchase wine, and to enjoy their wine tastings.

Kathy Bankerd is the owner, and one very knowledgeable and helpful person when it comes to wine. And it shows in their selection. We have become much more familiar with red wines since we first started visiting this store and began talking with Kathy. She understood our lack of knowledge, but willingness to learn, and patiently (spending over 1 hour the first visit) shared her thoughts and recommendations on a series of reds we should try to begin acquiring a taste and appreciation for Zinfandels, Cabernets, Malbecs and more. They keep a list on their system of the wines we have bought so we can refer to them in the future, or use them for comparison to other wines, especially when we don't keep notes or the label.

We have also been attending some of the wine tastings, which are held pretty much every week (Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays), and which offer a tremendous opportunity to sample a wide range of wines and meet, in some cases, the winemakers. Kathy offers special wine tastings to celebrate different times of the year, the release of new vintages, and has expanded the store to double its size, and there is a new and larger tasting room and an espresso bar. In addition they offer a number of gift items, personalized gift baskets, and private events.

We attended their wine tasting this past Friday night featuring Tobin James of Paso Robles, one of our favorites. Their Zinfandel, Ballistic, is perhaps our favorite red wine. We also had a chance to meet Toby James himself, which was great fun. And as James Gang Wine Club members we get to enjoy special wines shipped to our home twice a year. Cool. We are planning a trip in May to the vineyard which should be great fun (they are some great events during the year too).

My First Padres Game

I am a little embarassed to admit this, after being here for almost two years, but I went to my first San Diego Padres game last night. I have been by Petco Park numerous times, from my travels to the Gaslamp area, wandering around town, and when looking a condos nearby for clients.

This is a great venue, although I will say that as a Red Sox fan, after having lived in Boston for 20 years, Fenway Park is at the top of my list. But I imagine any diehard fan feels that way about their city's sports arena.

Petco is pretty impressive, and the game (which the Padres won against the Giants 4-0) was pretty good. A bit ho hum for the first few innings but once the Padres started scoring it got more interesting (no surprise) and the fans more excited. We sat in left field (for $14 each plus the $3.50 charge for ordering tickets on-line) and had a great view. Lot of Giants fans scattered about and plenty of folks having a great time (a good number were clearly there more for the party than for the game).

All in all a great experience, and I plan to go back. If you have not been there it is definitely worth it. Stop off in the Gaslamp beforehand, as we did, for dinner (Dick's LastResort seemed to be the right place before the game - lots of fans there).

Plein Air Brunch at the Cannon Art Gallery, Carlsbad

The Cannon Art Gallery in South Carlsbad is hosting its 6th annual Plein Air Brunch, the fundraiser for the gallery. If you have an interest in art, like to support it in the local community, and would like something fun to do on a Sunday morning, this may be it.

The Cedros District in Solana Beach

I really enjoy visiting the Cedros District in Solana Beach. If you have not taken time to tour this area, just a block east of the coastal route (the 101), it is well worth the visit.

I am not a big clothing shopper (much of my shopping is on-line) but I do enjoy shopping for art, antiques, home furnishings and garden/patio. If you are only into clothing, this area is not the best place for you.

But if you are shopping for your home, looking into a designer, decorator, or architect, or planning your own remodeling and redecorating projects, then this is one of the better venues I have found in San Diego.

I spent a good part of the afternoon there the other day and decided to write about it. There are lots of photos and a visual tour. So stop by an take a look at my Shopping Stroll in the Cedros District.

Elizabethan Desserts - A Feast for the Eyes and Tastebuds

Elizabethan Desserts.

What an elegant name. And what delectable desserts they are.

I was introduced to these wonderful goodies yesterday by a good friend (who always seems to find the best places to buy sweets), Nancy Bahr Kelly (who, I might add, is a talented designer with her own line of handbags, scarves and belts - more on her in a later post). While I haven't yet visited the bakery (it is now on the must-do list) I have had the chance to enjoy a number of these wonderful creations by Elizabeth Harris, owner of Elizabethan Desserts, in the Sunshine Gardens on Quail Gardens Road in Encinitas (in the Encinitas Ranch area), at the corner of Encinitas Boulevard and Quail Gardens Road.

The first sampling was last night after dinner, with many more terrific treats today for the Easter Brunch we hosted at our house. The bunny cakes were enjoyed by all (a tasty delicate white cake with chocolate frosting) as were the Easter cookies, which were beautifully decorated. I can't recall the name of the bar (also in the pic) but the flavor and memory linger. We still have a carrot cake (one also sits in the middle of the rabbits) left to savor as well as a banana cream pie.

The business is new, as I understand, but Elizabeth is well on her way to sure success, if the treats I sampled are any indication of her talents. Her website is in its infancy but check back for more information as it develops. I know she is a talented caterer as well although I don't know the extent of that business now that she has opened this wonderful bakery/pastry shop.

If you have a chance to stop by to enjoy her creations, do so. It is well worth the trip...and a visual and taste delight.

The CARLSBAD VILLAGE FAIRE - this well-known event, and the largest single day event of its kind in California, will be held in the heart of Carlsbad Village on May 6, and attracts about 100,000 folks to hundreds of booths offering things to buy (art, jewelry, books, crafts, etc), food to enjoy, and entertainment for all. Great shopping and fun for all ages in the charming streets of Carlsbad Village. Get there early for the best deals!

ENCINITAS STREET FAIR - another great outdoor event held on coastal route 101 for 2 days later this month (April 28 - 29), between D and J streets in the heart of downtown Encinitas. Several hundred booths will offer plenty of shopping and food. You can easily make a day of it...if your pocketbook holds out.

OCEANSIDE DAYS OF ART - this celebration, the 15th, will be held on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22 and will feature some of the area's best visual, performing and musical artists in and around the civic center. Paintings, sculpture, pottery and ceramics, glassware and more will be on display to enjoy and purchase. Hundreds of musical performers will be on hand to entertain and enthrall. Don't miss this celebration of art.

Feng Shui Basics: Quick Tips for Spring

Greetings!

If you've been waiting for new opportunities to come your way, but things have been slow-moving, you might appreciate the Feng Shui tips below.

Remember, your doors and windows feed healthy energy (known as Ch'i) into your home. Make sure that ALL of the entrances into your house are uncluttered and inviting and that the (surrounding) symbolism is a reflection of what you would like to attract. This applies to the inside, too . . . Avoid having furniture that blocks doors or sliders, or items that are stored behind doors. It blocks opportunities from entering your life.
Position outside seating, statuary and water features so they are directing energy into, rather than away from, your home. We want your good luck coming in, not going out.
This is a great time of year to wash the interior/exterior of your windows (for more clarity and vision in life), and to check all of your light bulbs to see what needs replacing. This will bring extra illumination and exposure to your hard work and endeavors.

And, as I always say, the best way to attract good fortune in, is to put good energy out there . . . So give a compliment, offer a donation, or surprise someone with a random act of kindness to keep the Ch'i flowing.
